I think that some books are great, but to long.
100 years ago people have more time to read. There was no TV, Computer or Smart Phone…
Today we don’t have to much time for reading. There is to much going on…
Well, I’m not any authority on writing but only a “Rookie Writer” – and I think, that SHORTER IS BETTER. And this is only my view on writing.
Personally I don’t read Blog Posts with more than 500 words. Well, sometimes I give “Like” because I like the beginning or pictures.
And I don’t read or buy books with more than 300 pages. Maybe only “short stories” or something extremely interesting.
I just don’t have a time.
Myself – I can not write long paragraphs, because of my poor English. π !!!
And I’m very good on “short writing”. I can make even very short story shorter.
Let’s take Latin phrase: “VENI, VIDI, VICI”.
Julius Cesar wrote to describe shortly his victory in his short war.
It means: “I CAME, I SAW, I CONQUERED”.
How clever. I love it!
But I will make it shorter: “I CAME, I CONQUERED”. I will skip “I SAW”, Because we know he wasn’t blind, so he saw… π !
And than, to conquer, he has to came there… So I will skip: “I CAME”.
And we have this all nice and short: “I CONQUERED”. In Latin: “VICI”. π , π , π !!!
Anyway, if you are not Hemingway, keep it short. π !!!
Good luck!!

God Bless you all.

Personally I avoid most blogs with pretty pictures and just a few words. Most books I own tend to be long, but that is my preference
Well Barney, some people don’t have to sleep and work. π .
You made me smile with your short post! Thank you! πGreta
I have always liked short stories. I like long books as well, but it can take me a while to get through it!
These days I like them short too or at least shorter..lol!
I suffer from too many words filtering through my brain. I have to work hard not to overwrite my sentences. I prefer clear and concise to just short. That is the key to my understanding when I read.
I like both long and short, be it story, novel, blog, etc. It depends on how well a writer (or photographer) portrays their subject. I, for one, tend to write short blog posts and I usually have lots of informative photos. I do this for 3 reasons:
1) English is not the original language of all my followers, but photos tend to be understood by most.
2) I began writing as a technical writer and was taught to use accurate, but easy words, but also only as many as were needed. Even hough I began switching to fiction a few years ago, this is the way I learned.
3) I suffered a neck injury about five years ago and after typing about a thousand words, my right arm usually starts getting numb, so I save most of my ‘word count’ for writing my novels.
Anna, have you started on second book, yet?
No. Maybe next year. First I have to promote “About”… π .
I feel like you. I just don’t like long blogs. Sometimes the point has already been made and they go on and on
You are very right there π
I generally attempt to compress my thoughts and ideas into fairly short posts. Though sometimes in order to convey what your subscribers need and want to read you have to add more content.
Concision of purpose is an element of beauty which is quite different from simplicity. Cheers
Simplicity is beautiful.
I love reading biography, history, true-crime, and novels. I think one way is if it’s a very good book. It won’t matter how long or short it is.
To make your point you quoted Caesar. He used a very concise language, which allowed him to produce such a short sentence. If you compare one paragraph written in Latin with its English translation, you find that you need twice as many words in English. Perhaps we should all learn Latin again. Just kidding ….
π !!!
I also find myself shying away from post that are longer than 600 words. I stick with the blogging principle little more often. well in my case little not very often π

It doesn’t matter to me whether a blog is long or short as long as it’s true. I write short blogs because I’m no writer. I do this to help other people who may have been in the same situation that I have been in and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel no matter what life throws at you. In 1999 I thought my world had ended when I fell 10 metres (33 feet) into the hold of a cargo ship. Initially in hospital for 10 months and then on and off for 2 years. It was 5 years until I got back on my feet properly. If I can share how I got to where I am today then I can keep smiling for me and them. Thank you for the advice and I will keep mine short.
I Feel You!
Lol!! Clever:). I naturally try to keep it short . Then I edit to trim it down. So many wonderful blogs to follow and great books to read!!
I agree with you! I do not know how to fit everything into my busy days and I so want to be supportive of everyone who writes a new post. But, if it is too long, then I can feel myself getting very stressed. We need to find time to watch the grass grow- to sit and just look at the sky…to just be. I hope you allow time for that lovely lady x x
I agree with you. I am very guilty of making my posts very long, I have a lot of words in my brain! But I love to read your posts, and your sentences are so riveting, that even if your English is not as good as you might like it to be, it comes across deliberate, and that style that you have is so calming to read.
I love your change to the quote at the end! I did not know that quote and yes of course it is obvious that he wasn’t blind! π God bless you Anna x

I love love love this blog! Or should I just use the one ‘love’? π Seriously, great stuff – keep up the very interesting and inspiring writing.
I think that shorter books are good because they seem to entice people to read them. They aren’t so demanding of time…
I agree with you that some books can be a little too long. I’m currently wiring a young adult novel, and I’m worried it will be too short. But then again, some stories are better if they’re short and sweet! Nice post you have π
Hi Anna, Thank you for the ‘Like’, Wondering, was it coz of ” less than 500 word or was it just the beginning” :), still thank you.
This write up of yours echos my thoughts.Glad about the likeness.
I now wonder if my blog posts are too long? I know less is more but for beginners we tend to fall back on our verbosity crutches.
Its genetic actually ,some like novels other short stories , well I like short stories that can be read at one stretch
