My 71 Birthday.

So here I Am, 71 years old and alive.
I can walk slowly, talk a lot, write sometimes and I can remember most of it.
And I can count my blessings.
I’m thankful for what I have, and I’m thankful that I don’t have what I don’t need.

I’m feeling old only on my Birthday.
Tomorrow I’m going to be busy living my life and I’m going to be young again.

And if someone ask:”Are you a senior?”
I will say:”Sometimes”.

Mark Twain said:
“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter”.

I’m not going to spend the rest of my life worrying that I’m getting older.
Life is to short.
I have to get going.
I have to live my life.
I have to find more STUFF that matters.

Tom petty said:
“If you are not getting older, you’re dead”.
Yes, only Dead saves us from getting older.

I don’t mind getting older.
I’m getting closer to Eternity.
And I’m fine with that.

In this Life nobody is getting younger.

  5. Very well said. HUGS. I am 56 years old, turning 57 in a month or so. I was devastated when I turned 30, drunk as a skunk when I turned 40, and in a fugue stage in downtown Inner Harbor at 50. I no longer fear aging-I fear not aging gracefully. That being said, you’re still quite young, my dear. 🙂

  49. Lovely. Excellent advice to live by. But, perhaps may I suggest for the time being, using a different quote in place of the one by the great Tom Petty. He passed away last year and so his quote now changes the impact and intention of the piece, showing our vulnerability. Since I have a big birthday coming up in two weeks this poem hits very close to home. Thanks for sharing.

  65. Anna, I like the first part where you express how you feel. Some of the quotations below it are depressing. We can think about age better than that! Gosh, we don’t need to convince ourselves that birthdays are something to be happy about: hey are! My parents are in their early 70s and I enjoy hoping they will live as long as possible and with young Grandchildren, they do too. Think of the people you know, who didn’t live as long as 71.       1. I am a spiritual person who knows the soul continues. It goes without saying, that I am wishing you well in these physical years. I am saying, at every age, boldly declare yourself a happy birthday! At 45, I feel magical on my day and just as excited, as always. I have never believed the fun and spirit of our birthday traditions are only for children. 🙂

    As I keep approaching later 60’s (what year is this?:), I savor every day more and more.
    So much still to do, see, enjoy – specially grandboys, in my case.
    But so much of life to still live.

What a beautiful message and healthy way to look at growing older – and I also think we forget how many people don’t get the chance to grow older (someone I know through work recently passed away in his early 50s, he’d never been happy, always stressed and didn’t enjoy his job – retirement may have brought some relief later , but he never got that far. This made me reflect on how important it is to look after yourself, nourish yourself and create balance in life, remembering that the world and it’s expectations can be pushed aside if you decide to put yourself first).

  84. Hi Anna! I myself turned 48 on April 4th, our common birthdate. Thank you for sharing your thoughts about aging. What? What was that again? Like you quoted Mark Twain, if you and I don’t mind, then it doesn’t need to matter. To me, another Solar Return is an opportunity to gain the wisdom of experience, good, bad, or middling. It all results in a much-desired soul growth. And I thank you for being a part of mine. Happy 71st birthday, Ms. Oneanna, but then, who’s counting the years? I prefer to count in units of BEAUTY, inside and out.

  95. Happy 21st birthday! I also feel old on my birthday only, but less so as the years pass by. Somehow, the fewer regrets, the less old I feel. I do feel old on the last day of each year though, but that’s an entirely different matter 🙂

  100. I love the part where you wrote about people asking you “are you a senior?” “Sometimes.” This is brilliant. One can feel young even though his or her age so “old”. Maybe we can go around asking people “how young are you?!” Instead of “how old are you?!”

  104. As I get older I understand more and more what it feels like when on the outside you look elderly but inside your still 16. I just turned 30 and its amazes me how fast time goes. I hope you are keeping well!
